A Welcome from Judge Rivera,

judge riveraIt has been an honor and a privilege to serve this community on the bench for the last 23 years, both as associate judge in family court and as an elected judge for the 168th Judicial District Court. I have presided over family, civil, criminal, and high-profile capital murder trials. I am proud of a record that reflects integrity, as well as efficiency and competence. Over the last 25 years society has witnessed many changes; some came about only after great concerted effort in the face of strong opposition. I am proud of the role I played in bringing about public awareness of domestic violence and in changing the reaction to it by the judicial system.

I am also proud to have influenced the creation of a domestic violence unit for the prosecution of protective orders. The introduction of computers to handle the massive court’s docket and the use of technology to run the court’s business was first introduced under my term as court master in the mid-‘80s. Commitment and service to the legal profession has always been one of my passions.

I presently serve on the Supreme Court’s Rules of Evidence Advisory Committee and on the State Bar’s Pattern Jury Charge Oversight Committee. I have served on the Council and as Chair of one of the State Bar’s largest sections, the Litigation Section; on the Council and as Chair of the Women and the Law Section; and on the Council of the Family Law Section. I frequently write and lecture for both the Texas State Bar and the El Paso Bar Association. I have been honored locally and statewide for various things, but I am most proud of the coveted Sam Pessara Outstanding Jurist Award presented by the State Bar of Texas.

My service on the bench is truly my greatest passion and it is my desire to continue that service in a new forum. I believe that my extensive trial experience and legal ability prepare me for that. I have therefore decided to campaign for election to the Eighth Court of Appeals and I invite you to join me as I begin that effort.

Issues that affect you.
